Special Issue on: "Theory and Applications of the Harmony Search Method"

Guest Editors:
Dr. Xiao-Zhi Gao, Aalto University, Finland
Dr. Z. W. Geem, Gachon University, Korea

The Harmony Search (HS) method is an emerging meta-heuristic optimisation algorithm. As we know, when musicians play in harmony, they usually try various possible combinations of music pitches stored in their memory. This kind of efficient search for a perfect harmony is analogous to the procedure of finding optimal solutions to real-world problems.

First proposed by Geem in 2001, the HS method was inspired by the underlying principles of harmony improvisation. During recent years, it has been successfully applied in numerous engineering fields such as mechanical structure design, slope stability analysis, optimal control systems, pipe network optimisation, etc.

Subject Coverage
Suitable topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Fundamentals of the HS method
  • Theoretical analysis of the convergence and stability of the HS method
  • Empirical study of the performance of the HS method
  • Benchmarking and comparison of the HS method with other optimisation algorithms
  • Hybrid HS methods
  • Large-scale optimisation using the HS method
  • Applications of the HS method
