Adverse impacts of transportation on the local and global environment, on society and on the economy have been escalating, and have resulted in the intensifying of worldwide efforts in the “greening” of the transportation sector through the increased use of clean energy for vehicle propulsion.

Despite the advancements in recent years at vehicle level design and integration of clean energy with either traditional or innovative powertrains, major technological and economical hurdles still need to be overcome at the component and key technological areas in order to promote sustainable growth and market penetration of “green” or “greener” vehicles, including electric, hybrid electric, plug-in hybrid, fuel cell hybrid, pneumatic hybrid, alternative fuels and solar hybrid applications.

We are therefore launching a special issue on clean energy for vehicle application. The primary objective of the issue is to compile and document state of the art research, development efforts and progress in the design, optimisation, control, functional safety, diagnosis, prognosis, performance enhancement, emission abatement, analytical methods and experimental testing of advanced power and propulsion subsystems for “green” powertrains.

Subject Coverage
Suitable topics include but are not limited to:

  • Advanced energy storage systems
  • Onboard energy management of hybrid and multi-hybrid vehicles
  • Interaction between grid infrastructure and vehicle charging/refueling
  • Management of power grids and renewable energy resource interfacing
  • Battery management systems
  • Electric machine and drive systems
  • Propulsion system design, optimisation and integration
  • Combustion and emission control
  • Performance enhancement and emission abatement
  • Waste heat recovery and utilisation
  • Hydrogen production, delivery and storage
  • Fuel cell power systems
  • Alternative fuels
  • Impact of greener vehicle technology on car makers' market policies
  • Impact of sustainable mobility on regional and local transportation systems
