Buildings consume about 40% of the electricity used worldwide. Due to the spurt in the growth of the building sector worldwide and especially in developing countries, energy efficiency improvement in buildings has become a global issue. Passive systems have been in existence for cooling, heating and illuminating the buildings. However, use of passive systems in tropical climates has been relatively typical compared to climates that require heating of buildings.

Design of passive systems has more science in it and leaves less scope for making mistakes, over sizing, and even allows taking corrective measures very easily. Considering these facts, this special issue aims at covering the key topics related to passive systems with special focus on tropical climates.

We encourage submissions of original theoretical and empirical research papers, meta-analytic reviews, and narrative literature reviews on new developments in the sphere such as design approaches, modelling of passive systems; integration of passive systems with active systems, and case studies of successful or unsuccessful implementation of passive systems.

We aim to report the latest advancements in the highly interdisciplinary research and development area of building energy efficiency.

Subject Coverage
Suitable topics include, but are not limited to:
  • Design of passive cooling, heating, lighting systems
  • Performance analysis of passive systems in contemporary buildings
  • New techniques in simulation and design
  • Role of passive systems in building energy efficiency codes and rating systems
  • Life cycle analysis
  • Design tools for passive systems
  • Hybrid active-passive systems
  • Controls for passive systems
  • Case studies
