As energy consumption becomes a larger concern for both industry and consumers, a significant amount of research is currently being carried out to save fuel and reduce production costs.

Developing new and/or optimising the use of lightweight materials, such as polymers, without compromising safety standards and performance criteria is one method of cutting fuel use, particularly in industries associated with transportation. Along with cutting energy costs, designers also see the need to reduce the amount of expensive mechanical testing, e.g. crash tests, as well as time-consuming material testing encompassing a wide variety of environmental and loading conditions. Computational methods offer an excellent opportunity to cut costs and predict material response over a much larger range of conditions than could ever be examined through experiments.

This special issue features new discoveries and advances in the fields of multi-objective design, manufacturing, crashworthiness, and shape and topology optimisation of automobile components with evolutionary approaches. It brings together research scientists and design engineers from across the globe to explore current issues regarding optimisation algorithms, uncertainty, identification of weak links with regard to optimisation algorithms (sample techniques), etc.

This issue provides a platform intended to foster emerging ideas regarding development of advanced optimisation algorithms for vehicle design and manufacturing processes.
