Manufacturing engineers are involved with the process of manufacturing from planning to packaging of the finished product. In this world of global competition, manufacturing processes need continuous improvement to cater the demand of increasing productivity, flexibility and quality of the product. The need for dimensional accuracy, superior mechanical and surface properties of the product has imposed a major change in the manufacturing industries.

The manufacturers are therefore under pressure to improve their productivity by automating the production system and optimising their process parameters to achieve maximum efficiency and quality. This state of affairs demands application of different optimisation techniques in the manufacturing processes to figure out methods and systems to produce in an efficient and cost-effective way and provide a marketing edge for the final product.

This special issue invites the submission of high quality research articles related to the area of application of optimisation techniques in the manufacturing processes. Special interest will be on applications of new and advanced (soft computational) techniques of optimisation, viz. genetic algorithms, artificial neural networks, simulated annealing, ant colony optimisation, particle swarm optimisation etc. in the domain of single or multi-objective optimisation.

Topics covered by this special issue include, but are not limited to, applications of classical as well as modern optimisation techniques in the following manufacturing processes:

  • Net shape forming
  • Deformation processes: drawing and stretching
  • Traditional and non-traditional machining
  • Joining, rapid prototyping, layered and composite manufacturing
  • Manufacturing of semiconductors
  • Emerging manufacturing technologies of nano and biomaterials
  • Manufacturing of alternative energy sources

Submitted papers should not have been previously published nor be currently under consideration for publication elsewhere
