Abstract: In wireless sensor networks, MAC layer plays a crucial role in the performance enhancement. Therefore, this paper develops an enhanced virtual backoff algorithm to route the packets to the queue based on the delay, as well as an ant colony optimisation algorithm for selecting the best nodes from the available nodes. The node counters are maintained for each node to calculate the success rate, and a sleep schedule is introduced to reduce the energy consumption and to improve the lifetime of the network. The experimental results proved that the proposed model is efficient in preserving the energy, decreasing the node collisions and improving the packet delivery ratio.
