Cyclic behaviour of cantilever RC columns with steel fibre reinforced concrete at plastic hinge regions

Abstract: Steel fibre reinforced concrete (SFRC) has been used in a wide range of structural applications to improve the overall behaviour, energy absorption capacity, and damage tolerance of reinforced concrete (RC) members. This study aims at investigating the cyclic behaviour of concrete columns in which SFRC is used only at the expected plastic hinge regions. Three geometrically similar specimens, namely, one RC and two SFRC columns with fibre content of 0.75% and 1.0%, are tested under the reversed-cyclic lateral loading. The main objectives of this study are to determine the lateral strength, ductility, failure mechanism, and energy dissipation potential of test specimens. The addition of 0.75% steel fibres enhanced the lateral strength of columns by 25%. At the failure state, the RC specimen showed the formation of flexural plastic hinges near the footing. The addition of steel fibres at these locations improved the energy dissipation potential.
