Abstract: A finite element method for acoustic wave propagation based on a modified wave equation is established, taking into account the influence of a time-independent inhomogeneous flow on the acoustic waves. The simulation scheme is verified for homogeneous flow, validated with geometrical acoustics for inhomogeneous flow profiles and compared with previously developed techniques, such as Helmholtz-Kirchhoff integral and ray tracing methods. As applications, an ultrasound flowmeter and a sound protection shield are studied for different flow profiles.
