Abstract: In this work, hybrid particle swarm optimisation-grey wolf optimiser (PSO-GWO) technique is proposed to tune the parameters of UPFC-based dual damping controller. The proposed optimised controller is applied to damp inter area oscillations in a multi machine power system. The dual controller simultaneously controls two independent control actions of UPFC, which are modulation index of series converter and phase angle of shunt converter. Before being tested to multi-machine system, the controller is tested in a single machine system to validate its efficacy. The results obtained with proposed controller are compared with PSO and GWO optimised controller to prove its supremacy. A broad comparison is performed between single lead-lag and dual controller optimised by PSO, GWO and PSO-GWO techniques. The system responses and eigenvalues show that proposed PSO-GWO optimised dual controller damps oscillations to a large extent in contrast to all other single and dual optimised controllers.
