Derivation of optimum abrasive for improving magnetic polishing rate for hybrid metal AM titanium alloy and creating a polishing prediction model

Abstract: The supply of artificial replacement products such as artificial joints and artificial bones is increasing and is expected to increase in the future. Therefore, it is considered that integrating processes from additive manufacturing (AM) to cutting and polishing in a hybrid metal AM machine could greatly contribute to the stable supply of products. In addition, it is possible to manufacture artificial replacement products suitable for each patient simply by changing the 3D model. In this study, focusing on polishing, we applied a magnetic polishing method in which a permanent magnet tool was attached to the spindle of the machining centre, and a magnetic abrasive was attached to the tool and rotated. Magnetic polishing was performed on a hybrid metal AM titanium alloy, and the effects of changes in the composition of the magnetic polishing paste on the polished surface properties and polishing rate were investigated. A polishing prediction model with an optimal abrasive that can be used to derive the polishing path and time was constructed.
