Abstract: The aim of this article is to explain the generation of positive impacts on the social accounts of a knowledge-based city applying open innovation initiatives: case of Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico. The article addresses the subject of the capital system model from the perspective of a knowledge city, as well as the open innovation funnel model. The integration of open innovation initiatives into permanent communication media such as social networks provides a continuous platform for promoting events and messages that boost the social accounts of a city. The participation indicators were integrated into the open innovation initiative promoted in the city and into the activity of social networks. Access to hard participation data collected over 12 months was a key factor in the review of initiatives and in the development analysis of the capital system of the city. Statistical tests (ANOVA) and specialised software (SSPS) were used to analyse the information.
