Abstract: In this study, Taguchi-based desirability function analysis (DFA) and regression analysis approach were used to optimise the multiple quality characteristics simultaneously in turning of commercially pure titanium grade-2. The experiments were carried out based on Taguchi's L9 orthogonal array with untreated and cryogenically treated carbide inserts. Cutting speed (v), feed rate (f) and depth of cut (d) were taken as three input variables. Performance measures like cutting force (Fc), surface roughness (Ra), machining temperature (Tm) and material removal rate (MRR) were evaluated. The results were compared with each other in order to exhibit the improved performance of cryogenically treated inserts. A mathematical model was also developed for each output response using regression analysis. The cutting force and machining temperature of cryo-treated inserts were observed to be lesser in comparison with the untreated ones. The surface finish produced on the machined part was marked better with cryo-treated inserts.
