Experimental investigation on fuzzy-based dynamic PWM controller using FPGA for harmonics and torque ripple minimisation in BLDC motor drive

Abstract: The brushless DC motor (BLDCM) drive suffers with a high degree of voltage, current harmonics and torque ripple in the output. The proposed active filtering technique reduces the harmonics and the torque ripple effectively and improves the performance of the motor. Due to the non-linear characteristics of the motor, fuzzy logic is found to be the suitable technique to control the filtering action. This paper discus the fuzzy logic controlled variable frequency and variable duty ratio pulse width modulation technique for the motor drive to minimise the harmonics and the ripple torque. The frequency and the duty ratio are dynamically adjusted by the fuzzy controller for the wide range of speed and load application. This technique is experimented using Virtex II Pro Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) and obtained convincing results. The experimental results confirm the effectiveness of this technique in minimising harmonics and torque ripple of the motor drive.
