Abstract: Computer simulation, although an extremely useful technique for analysing complex systems, suffers from the major disadvantage in that it does not by itself yield optimal solutions. In this paper, two nonlinear optimisation algorithms were integrated into the simulation language SLAMII, using the example of two workstations in series. A special main program was written to invoke the SLAM processor during execution of simulation and two subroutines process the input parameters and results of replications. Both algorithms successfully converged to an optimum value, although one of them required one fewer function evaluation than the other.
