Abstract: Dead-time which is applied to the voltage source inverter (VSI) distorts the inverter output voltage waveforms and deteriorates the control performance of an ac-servo driver by producing torque ripples. A dead-time compensation method is proposed in this paper. The method is based on a feed-forward approach that produces compensating signal by using the phase of the current vector in the two-phase stationary (α/β) frame. It provides excellent inverter output voltage distortion correction for both fundamental and harmonic components. The method is only software intensive and easy to be realised without additional hardware. Simulation and experimental results obtained from the compensation method are also described.
