Abstract: This paper proposes a method of selecting design strategies for user interfaces (UI) for AV remote controllers based on the analytic hierarchy process. The design policy for the optimum UI is selected on the basis of the function and scale of the AV system and the user's knowledge using four other evaluation criteria – functional choice, operation procedure, knowledge of the AV equipment and the system structure. As a final option, the authors have decided the authors' design strategy for the UI – visual, functional, sensor and I/O and interactive oriented. Verification experiments using a developed prototype controller were carried out: one when a beginner operates a smallscale system and the other when an AV experienced user operates a large-scale system. As a result, the interactive and visual oriented UI were suitable for the beginner. This indicates that the proposed model is expected to enable UI design befitting the actual situation of AV systems getting larger in scale and multifunctional.
