Abstract: The presented work deals with the development of a computational method to analyse the mechanical properties of PVD coatings. The replacement of an analytical approach of the contact problem with a numerical one avoids meeting assumptions related to rotational symmetry, absence of the friction, linear elasticity and even homogeneity. The way of determining the complicated multi-parametrical material laws based on the simulation of nanoindentation has been considered. Special attention has been paid to the numerical aspects of the method like accuracy, sensitivity and efficiency. The application of the method has been illustrated for the case of transversal isotropy.
