In the last decades, the cyber domain has played a major role in advancing science and technology. But the interconnection of systems through networks, access to information, different computer technologies and the combination of all these aspects is exposes both academic and industry infrastructures to serious risks. These broadly derive from unauthorised operations or access to computerised platforms without permission of the platform's owner. The consequences of these attacks are almost always invasive and disruptive for the computerised systems, and can be fatal if the attacks are performed in the domain of smart health devices. The need therefore arises to research effective security-based solutions for nullifying these risks or countering the attacks. In recent years, this has been successfully accomplished through the use of intelligent technologies, including artificial intelligence, machine learning and deep learning solutions. In fact, these have provided valid support in many areas including cyber risk identification, risk assessment of software packages, and preserving security in Internet connections.

Today, intelligent systems for cyber security cover a broad range of areas, including smart cities, cyber-physical systems and critical infrastructures, security of vehicles and implantable medical devices, malware research, cryptography, biometrics, watermarking, human-computer interaction security, security in wireless sensor networks, security in radio-frequency identification, early detection and intervention, and privacy. Given the high academic and industrial impact of researching in these areas for the sake of beneficial effects on society, this special issue will cover basic trends, applications and challenges through theoretical or application-based contributions underlying the construction of secure systems starting from hardware and software and ending at the human-computer interface. Accordingly, it is possible to expect cryptography usage to enable secure interactions. All papers exploring state-of-the-art solutions in the form of extended reviews or advanced research papers are especially welcome.
