Reference: WORLD SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OUTLOOK 2006 pp. 116 - 125

Abstract/Summary: Tertiary education is an important wheel for the development and progress of a nation. In Ghana it is heavily dependent on real estate since distance education is quite a new concept. However, there are problems related to the management of the landed properties. This study focuses on facilities management in three public tertiary institutions in Kumasi and makes recommendations for optimum results. It proposes a new structure for the residence committees in the institutions; a review of the Statutes and Laws governing the institutions; the institutions having functional and properly equipped Facilities Management Units (FMUs) and a National Facilities Management Board (NFMB) that shall see to policy and have oversight responsibility for the management of facilities in the institutions as well as monitoring and evaluation.
