Abstract: The main purpose of this research is to analyse whether Knowledge Intensive Service Activities (KISA) are important for the innovation process of the Irish software sector and, if so, whether the necessary conditions for their development exist. In order to achieve this objective the paper is divided into three main parts. The first part shows which KISA are performed, where they are sourced from and how they integrate with each other to generate the innovation processes along the product cycle of Irish software firms. The second part summarises the main barriers for innovation and the principal Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) mechanisms, while the last section draws some main conclusions.
