Abstract: Energy regeneration is an essential factor for improving range and fuel economy of electric vehicles. Although prolonged deceleration can increase regenerative energy, a shorter deceleration avoids an accident and reduces the overall trip time. A multi-objective approach is adopted here to find the optimal deceleration satisfying such conflicting objectives. Considering the journey comfort is another concern to the passenger's health, an optimal driving zone is designed for different speed changes with serial regenerative braking system. Simulation results suggest that using two decelerations during braking is most appropriate. Analysis of published experimental drive data of an electric bus confirms the similar notion. The proposed approach is implemented in planned braking mode in which driver well before knows the location where the vehicle is to be stopped or have a certain speed. It improves fuel economy and range of electric vehicles, which build confidence to the electric vehicle users for trip planning.
