Abstract: The automotive ındustry is shifting to electrical vehicle technology which is governed mainly from cleaner energy and reducing dependence on fossil fuel. Bearing usage per vehicle is expected to go down with electric vehicle. Present paper discusses the impact of electric vehicles on bearing industry and new technological requirements for successful development of EV bearings. Enhanced bearing life, reliability improvement, power dense bearing, smart sensor bearings, optimised friction, noise, vibrations and harshness characteristics, special attention to lubrications and sealing are some of the key technical requirements for EV bearings. Surface engineering and application of specialty coatings have potential to increase bearing application coverage and optimise the cost of bearings for EVs. Electrical pitting and lubricant burning are going to generate the internal contamination in the bearings which may reduce the life of bearings. Bearing engineers need to adapt their know-how to new EV requirements.
Keywords: electrical vehicle bearings; reliability improved bearing; power dense bearing; smart bearing; friction optimisation in bearing.
