Abstract: The aim of this study was to explore and determine how maritime literature on freight transportation has developed and reveal prospects to academic researchers. To do this, journal articles were selected using the social science citation index, and a content analysis conducted on 3,365 articles. The findings show that most of this literature focuses on freight rates, with most studies specifically investigating container ships and bulk carriers. Other areas, i.e., rail road, coastal shipping, etc., remain under researched.

Keywords: academic literature; maritime transportation; systematic literature review; shipping journal.
