Abstract: The need for vehicular traffic monitoring systems (VTMS) is escalating at alarming rates all across the world. This is especially the case in India. With the advent of internet of things (IoT), smarter systems are being designed to ensure smoother flow of traffic. Besides being 'smart', these systems are also required to be simple, cheap, efficient and easy to implement. This paper shows a design of a VTMS with energy-based routing scheme (EBRS) that makes use of wireless sensor nodes. The scenario is designed in NetSim and the simulation results are analysed qualitatively and quantitatively in terms of percentage variations. Prototype of an IoT-based hardware setup using SENSEnuts modules is validated.
