Abstract: In this paper, we extend the classic data centre allocation optimisation problem for critical tenant applications that need guarantees on the required resource capacities. We identify a set of representative, user-issuable constraints and new optimisation objectives and establish a mathematical and corresponding integer programming formulation. Using a typical network function virtualisation application as a case study, we show the viability of the approach and present an initial scalability assessment. Our results demonstrate the advantage of combining the conflicting objectives of the tenants and the provider in a single optimisation problem.

Keywords: data centre allocation optimisation; virtual machine placement; infrastructure as a service; IaaS; integer linear programming; network function virtualisation; NFV; deployment of critical applications.
