Abstract: Instantaneous localisation of the vehicles in a Vehicular Ad-Hoc Network (VANET) scenario is very crucial in order to manage the smart traffic model. Hence, the Global Positioning System (GPS) has gained popularity for the assistance of the autonomous vehicles and positioning. Cooperative Positioning (CP) is also one of the important solutions to solve the problem of location finding. Our intention is to provide the solution to the inaccurate positioning due to signal loss in GPS devices. In certain terrains, vehicles are sometimes unable to get their locations. To address this issue, we propose a novel grid/region-based on-road localisation system, where vehicles, irrespective of the availability of GPS signals, organise themselves in the network, exchange information and assist each other to calculate their position with higher precision for all the vehicles inside the network. The proposed system has been tested on a real test bed.
