Abstract: The increasing complexity of modern engine configurations introduces challenges during the calibration process. Multi-objective optimisation requires multiple experiments to cover wide ranges of control actuator set-points. Simulation-based calibration provides a valuable tool that significantly decreases mapping times and provides initial estimations for engine behaviour. In this research, one-dimensional simulation software is used to model, calibrate and optimise an engine configuration under fuel economy considerations. A design of experiments (DoE) approach is implemented to identify influences of various control actuators on engine performance. Post-processing of the DoE is discussed and the optimisation process that provides the engine mapping is evaluated. Various constraints are applied during optimisation and the results' quality and consistency is assessed for two different spark-ignition engine configurations; a V6 naturally aspirated engine and a 4-cylinder turbocharged engine with low pressure EGR. Finally, simulation results are experimentally validated with dynamometer testing to determine the accuracy of the methods presented.
