Abstract: Simultaneous transmission of data from one sender to multiple receivers is called multicasting. This is going to play a key role in future wireless networks like audio video teleconferencing, real-time video streaming and the maintenance of distributed databases. In resource limited environment like MANET, it is necessary to provide effective quality of service (QoS) to achieve more efficient multicast packet delivery. But provision of QoS guarantees is much more challenging in MANETs than wired networks due to node mobility, limited power supply and a lack of centralised control. In order to provide a comprehensive understanding, we present a survey on end-to-end performance metrics of QoS-aware multicast routing protocols. Finally, comparisons are made among various multicast routing protocols considering parameters like QoS assurances provided, network architecture, route discovery, PDR, relative total overhead, energy aware, resource reservation facility, etc.

Keywords: mobile ad hoc networks; MANETs; mobile nodes; multicast routing protocols; quality of service; QoS; energy consumption; survey; multicasting.
