Abstract: The selection and manipulation of inductor and process design parameters markedly affect the metallurgical and mechanical results of induction heat treatment processes. The primary purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of these critical design factors and to discuss their scope and method of influence. A practical case study illustrating the extent to which these design factors can impact heat treatment results is considered and analysed in detail, from concept to final results. Computer simulation is leveraged throughout to clearly and quantitatively demonstrate the implications of inductor and process design.

Keywords: induction heat treatment; induction hardening; computer simulation; metallurgy; mechanics; inductor design; process design.
