Abstract: This paper surveys the transport related environmental research carried out in Austria. To make results comparable at the European level, the following commonly agreed criteria are used for its classification: intrinsic characteristics (problem definition, policy strategies, theoretical assumptions, method, and data) and meta-characteristics (scientific innovation, and contribution to real policy-making). Certain research issues arise from Austria|s specific location and topography.

Keywords: transport and environment; sustainable transport; transport policy; national literature survey; Austria.
