Abstract: Research in Ireland is very limited and, as a result, baseline studies are important. Problem areas identified in current research are related to the environmental impacts of significant growth in transport and the efficiency of major infrastructure projects that are being undertaken. Much of the research has been driven by the EU investment support for improvement of transport infrastructure. Given the high level of economic growth experienced, the lack of integrated planning approach to transport and land use could become a major deficiency in the effective contribution that research can make to policymaking.
