Abstract: Over the past decade, Hungary has been in transition from a centrally planned market economy. In this paper, we explore the reasons for and consequences of the changed funding conditions which now exist for environmental research. We also outline the situation regarding the need for research into two major areas: transport and the environment and energy efficiency. The most important project areas in these domains are also given.

Keywords: Hungary; environment; energy efficiency; transport; research.
