Abstract: This paper focuses on design of a distributed system for remote storage management in a networked environment supporting multiple operating system platforms. It uses a model that facilitates rapid assessment of a remote computer|s storage infrastructure using the RMI mechanism of Java. An attempt is made in this article to highlight design of applications that automate discovery, monitoring, collecting and reporting of storage capacity, utilisation and availability statistics while ensuring cross-platform compatibility in a multi OS networked environment. The article focuses on a design of a distributed application called StorageManager, and guides researchers through the general steps necessary to build systems for remote storage management.

Keywords: distributed systems; remote method invocation; RMI; remote objects; remote storage management; multiple operating system platforms; storage capacity; storage utilisation; storage availability; networking; memory management.
