Abstract: Continuous monitoring of patient's signals has the potential to improve the quality life of patients. This paper proposes a method to detect peaks in ECG signal for finding heart rate. It is one of the most important physiological parameter, which is being extensively used for knowing the state of the cardiac patients. ECG feature extraction is necessary for detection of cardiovascular abnormalities. The wavelet transform is considered to be the most appropriate tool to analyse the non-stationary signals. In this paper discrete wavelet packet transform algorithm is used to find heart rate from ECG signal. Proposed methodology has decomposition tree to eliminate the wavelet coefficients which contains the repeated information thereby it optimises the execution time and results in higher temporal resolution. Proposed work uses the improved algorithm to increase the accuracy in measuring the heart rate from the ECG signal.
