Abstract: Education may be the most important factor influencing an individual's income and, as a result, education can be used as a source to increase future potential earnings. It therefore becomes important to determine the significance of this change in income when considering level of education, while also considering other factors influencing an individual's income. This paper addresses the question of tertiary education's significance in relation to income, by determining whether the level of tertiary education has a positive and significant impact on the level of income received.

Keywords: tertiary education; return rate; income levels; South Africa; potential earnings.
