Abstract: Microwave down-converter modules are the key components in communications, radar and electronic warfare systems. The paper presents the design method of a low noise microwave down-converter module. The parameter of each component could be determined by the related parameter curves of the low noise amplifier, the mixer and the noise figure of the system. So, a list of parts which satisfied the needs could be selected out to complete the design. By using two cascaded low noise amplifies in the front end of the circuit, the low noise performance is fulfilled. A mirror suppression balanced mixer is followed to complete the frequency change, which can reduce the mixer noise effectively. Last, two cascaded intermediate frequency amplifies are putted to match the need of the total power gain. A down-converter for up-l ink wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) repeater is designed according to the analysed result, the overall noise figure is less than 0.8 dB, and the total gain is around 66 dB with 0.8 dB ripple under 60 MHz bandwidth.
