Abstract: Tourism is a domain in which individuals visit cities and places they are not familiar with and which they like to enlighten themselves. It is widely considered to be one of the emerging industrial sectors where mobile services are highly demanded. The applications on mobile devices in combination with positioning system enable the provision of location-based services in tourism. In this paper, we propose a location-based personal tourist guide system using multimedia contents. It is implemented as a mobile application that takes into account the current location of user and matches this to a pre-stored geo-information database in order to guide the visitor by pushing the corresponding multimedia information on his mobile device. The proposed system targets Android-based mobile devices equipped with global positioning system which allows executing the application in standalone mode without connecting to the web or relying on telecom networks.
