Abstract: A new computer programming system for optimum structural design has been developed. It consists of two modules; an optimiser and an analyser. The optimiser adopts the |Multiplier Method| and |Inscribed Hypersphere Method|. The main routine of the analyser is |SAP 4|. This programming system is applied to the design of motorcycle frames. Problems of an optimum design are studied to find the frame structure that has a minimised weight subject to constant torsional rigidity. The properties of two optimising algorithms are also discussed.

Keywords: computer-aided design; CAD; motorcycle frames; structural design; torsional rigidity; weight reduction; optimisiation; motorcycles; motorbikes.
