Abstract: This paper explores the world of Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI is a brand of computer science which deals with intelligent machines that can understand language, learn, perceive, see, plan, act and reason. In this paper the evolution of and components of this technology are discussed. Emphasis is placed on one branch of AI, known as Expert Systems, although all facets of AI are covered. The development of AI systems is discussed and several applications in the manufacturing industry are presented. Benefits and problems associated with AI and Expert Systems are delineated in this transcript, and future implications for the field are explored.
