Abstract: A short overview of the basic ideas of the finite-element method is given with a historical background. The different fields in which this method is used are briefly summarised. Worked examples show some applications of modern software products in the fields of structural mechanics and heat transfer. Problems in solving these examples are addressed.

Keywords: beam; computer-aided design; CAD; contact; fatigue; finite element method; FEM; fracture mechanics; heat transfer; load; mesh; metal forming; piping analysis; shell; stress range.
