Abstract: This paper develops a new approach towards tolerance stack analysis in an assembly. This approach uses the |rooted tree| as the basic foundation to develop a master representation of the assembly model for designers and engineers to calculate clearance and interference in an assembly. The approach, which has the potential of being computerized, will significantly reduce the amount of work and time required compared to the conventional method, which is tedious and time consuming. Two examples are used to illustrate the effectiveness of this method.
Keywords: graphical rooted tree model; production research; tolerance design; design for assembly; DFA; tolerance stack analysis; assembly models.
