Abstract: This paper is dealing with the setting-up procedure of the state-space models written in MATLAB of a four-stroke medium-speed supercharged diesel engine. Two different methods for different applications are outlined, as well as compared for accuracy and applicability. Both methods proved to be fully applicable in system dynamics investigations of ship propulsion plants and ground vehicles, such as buses, locomotives and earth-working machines. Dynamic responses, characterising the dynamic behaviour of the model are given as examples.
