Abstract: In this paper, the factors affecting the demand for basic food categories by Greek households are investigated. For that purpose a selectivity model is employed to derive the necessary elasticities using information at household level. In addition, and for comparison purpose, a non-parametric model based on the decomposition of the extended Gini coefficient is used to calculate income elasticities.

Keywords: Greece; food demand; microeconometrics; market demand; food consumption; income elasticities.
