Abstract: This paper describes the main outcomes of a pilot study which examined the use of bar codes technology to facilitate the effective receipt of goods from suppliers to customers. Amongst the lessons learned are: clear and concise objectives are required for the study: considerable attention should be paid to the equipment (hardware and software) used to conduct the study - if the organisation is serious about the use of bar coding, the temptation to use available equipment which is not ideally suited to the pilot project should be resisted: and the bar coding standards to be employed by the organisation|s customers should be established at the outset. Also, the difference between a customer and its supplier community can be enhanced by the use of bar coded supplies and this will facilitate the use of Electronic Data Interchange.
