Abstract: The designers of low floor city buses have to face severe restrictions on the available space and the positioning of the components of the drivetrain. Hydrostatic transmission offers construction freedom and solutions to the many needs of low floor vehicles. The major drawback is the lower transmission efficiency compared to purely mechanical transmissions. In order to exploit the full potential for C.V.T. an improved control strategy and system was developed and optimised with respect to fuel consumption for the vehicle. Comparing the conventional control system with the integrated computer control system in a simulation procedure showed fuel savings of 8 to 10 per cent for the computer control system.
