Abstract: A simplified tyre model has to account for two things for off-road vehicle dynamics simulations, the soil deformation and the tyre deformation. A trade-off between both these deformations will determine the contact geometry and consequently the contact pressure. This study presents the extension of a simplified tyre brush-based tyre model for on-road simulation to a simplified off-road wheel/tyre model that has the capability to revert back to on-road trend of behaviour on firmer terrain. The tyre model is developed based on observations of experimental data and photographic evidence collected by various terramechanics researchers within the last few decades. The outcome of this work shows results that show acceptable qualitative trends, consistent with the general observations from experimental data collected by various terramechanics researchers throughout the years. This study represents part three of the series where a flexible tyre on deformable terrain is implemented and output of the model is computed for a very firm and cohesive Yolo loam terrain to represent a condition where the soil exerts pressure on the tyre that exceeds the deformation modulus of the tyre.
