Abstract: The three-way catalyst system with oxygen sensor is one of the most successful systems from the viewpoint of reduction of exhaust emissions. However, the air-fuel ratio required by the three-way catalyst system is near stoichiometric, hence there is still room for fuel economy improvement. This paper introduces the Toyota Lean Combusion System (T-LCS), in which the air-fuel ratio is controlled precisely within the lean mixture range using the Lean Mixture Sensor. By this system, the engine can be operated with very lean mixture, which achieves great improvement of fuel economy.
