Title: Design of engine control modules for electromagnetic compatibility: case study

Abstract: The number of electronic component assemblies present in General Motors vehicles is steadily increasing. To achieve Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) at the vehicle level, design for EMC at the component assembly level is required. System requirements and their effects on system EMC are briefly reviewed, followed by are view of component level design considerations and techniques for evaluation of an electronic assembly prior to its installation in a vehicle. The design considerations presented include specific examples of Engine Control Module (ECM) ground structure design, component interconnection considerations, circuit radiation considerations, and techniques for minimizing radiation from the printed circuit board.
