Abstract: Current high volume automotive engine control modules (ECM) are designed and manufactured for field quality and reliability. Their 50,000 miles or 5 year warranty provides strong product development incentives. These incentives are met using high technology microcomputer architecture, advanced product design testability features, and advanced manufacturing tests. After reviewing a basic automotive engine control system architecture, the architecture of a specific 1985 ECM provided by Delco Electronics is described along with its hardware and software testability features. The ECM|s qualification program is then summarized and finally the production tests are described, including pans, assembly, and QC.
