Abstract: This paper discusses the relationship between the study of dynamics and design of vehicles. A conflict exists at present as the numerical data for dynamic analysis is often not available until late in the design process at a stage when design flexibility may have become limited. It is proposed here that in the future there will be more linkage between dynamic studies and computer aided design, with a trend towards engineers who have the ability to teach computers not only to draw but also what to draw. This should result in a speeding up of the design process.

Keywords: design flexibility; computer aided engineering; CAE; system optimisation; vehicle dynamics; vehicle design.
